Elk Creeks Preservation Society
Elk Creeks Preservation Society was founded in 1977. Our name is derived from the two branches of the Elk River, the Big Elk Creek and the Little Elk Creek. We are a nonprofit organization whose purpose is to restore and maintain historic structures and properties within the Elk Creeks watershed, while sharing the knowledge of our local history.
Past projects of the society include facilitation of the sale and eventual restoration of the Mitchell House (home of Revolutionary War physician Dr Abraham Mitchell and present day Fair Hill Inn), restoration of Centre School in Fair Hill, repairs to the old Rock Church cemetery and St Johns Methodist Church in Lewisville PA, an archaeological dig at the Wallace-Carter Mill site on the Little Elk Creek, and production of a documentary DVD of the history of the Elk Creeks.
Present projects of the Society include repair and maintenance of Centre School and restoration of a Revolutionary-era spring house on the Big Elk Creek, in conjunction with the DNR, as well as repairs to the Bee Hive, a complex of Colonial buildings by the Little Elk Creek. Our principal means of funding these endeavors is through our Apple Butter Festival, held annually in October at the Bee Hive.
